Mountain Sunrise | Artist Book
Where to start on this one… ”Mountain Sunrise” could have been more aptly titled, “Many Mountains and Sunrises Later” considering how long it to took to make it! The cover, 5 days and 5 lbs later (maybe a slight exaggeration in the weight) is what you see now but what isn’t observable is the angst, depression, swearing, etc that it took to get it there!
The whole accordion pleated background has two separate color washes done on a 36-inch piece of paper; a special extender was made of cardboard wrapped in freezer paper to accommodate that length while painting it because our desks are not that long. The background mountains running along the top have been reworked with colored pencils to make them match up as splicing had to occur to get the necessary length. All of the original papers used came from the “catch-paper” stash but needed additional colors added using ink, watercolor, and/or markers so they went with the mountain/sunset color theme. M worked on the tags getting the quotations to fit the space and assembled most to the actual physical part of the journal. The wrap-around closure band is crocheted from strips of silk saris; alas the video of its conception was lost due to gross negligence on the part of the person doing the demo. …’nuff said about that! AH, almost forgot to address the marvelous modeling paste used to create the textures on the front and back cover and 4 of the tags. This one (process video) survived, somewhat intact—it’s too painful to go into it here—so at least some of the how-tos are visually explained. The paper painting part is not there but a demo is in the works to rectify that omission—soon, really, soon, promise!
What’s coming up? Let’s see, a new type of accordion-pleated journal made from a single, folded piece of paper. A new round of texture modeling paste with painted paper will become the cover for the folded journal. Much was learned from this one that will be put to use in the next one…already thinking about how to add some bling to the paste, hmmm.
