Color Sprays a Comparison of Dye, Stain & Pigments

Color Sprays a Comparison of Dye, Stain & Pigments

Color sprays were products we first started using when we started PM artist Studio as a venture. We both had traditional art supplies in our stash we used over… well let’s just say over the years. When PM became more of our daily routine we started adding new products and sprays as we said some of the very first. The Mister Huey’s really sparked our creative art-fire within, so we then looked into getting more. We soon found out they were discontinued and are very hard to find and quite pricey if you do. So at that time we looked to other brands and found the Dylusions, then the Distress lines (stains and oxides), Lindy’s, and most recently the Aladine iZink Dye Sprays. In our Saturday Live Stream, we covered all the mentioned brands and reviewed the similarities, differences, what we love about each, and some of the things to watch out for.

Watch the Replay Here:

The following are the brands we reviewed and demoed on the gel plate.
Distress Spray Stains (a dye constructed in one formula)
Spray directly on porous surfaces for quick, easy ink coverage. Mist with water to blend color and create mottled effects. Spray through stencils, layer colors, spritz with water, and watch the color mix & blend. Spray Stains coordinate with the Distress palette of products.
Distress Oxide (a pigment in a solution) is more opaque and dries more slowly)
Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Sprays are a dye and pigment ink fusion that creates oxidized effects when sprayed with water. Use for quick and easy ink coverage on porous surfaces. Spray through stencils, layer colors, spritz with water, and watch the color mix and blend.

Dylusions Ink Spray
Dylusions Ink Sprays are a high-quality, acid-free, non-toxic concentrated colorant for porous surfaces. The Dylusions Ink Sprays’ bright and vibrant palette will colorize paper, canvas, wood, paper, clay, and more. Use to create backgrounds on cards, journal pages, and in mixed media art projects.

Seth Apter Aladine, Izink Dye Spray  (highly pigmented, water-based ink for porous surfaces) More Transparent than Oxides or Mister Huey’s very similar to TH Distress Spray Stains

Mister Huey’s Color Mists (opaque, depending on the color some more than others)

Lindy’s (We will be showing some not all of the following, the list is more of a way to reference the lines) Starbursts = shimmer + vibrant color
Flat Fabios =  vibrant color
Moon Shadow Mist = sepia-toned + shimmer
Glitz Spritz = shimmer only
SQUIRTS (These will be in our next purchase)
A little bit of ink and a little bit of paint all with amazing versatility!
