The Allure of Artist Trading Cards

The Allure of Artist Trading Cards

What is the allure of the ATC? What indeed!

In our journey to make our ATC into a wanted and valued item begins with PAPER, or rather the conscious choice of a durable, easy-to-work-on surface. That choice was watercolor paper, heavy cardstock, and chipboard. Some of the earlier ones were made more substantial by adding other layers in the form of collages or sandwiching in other papers to achieve a heavier-weight card whose heft alone alludes to its worthiness.

Doing, making, and experimenting in the small venue of 2 and a half by 3 and a half is ideal because so little product is expended that great fun can be had by using all that stored-up daring-do attitude and wild-side, dreamed-up escapades stream out onto the card!

With all that free-formed energy bursting forth onto the paper, it is no surprise that there occur fabulous messes, stunning disasters or never to be replicated wonders of the art world! No worries! We can conjure up a solution for just about any creative occurrence because we have many ’tools’ in our artistic belt:
  • glazes
  • stencils
  • mask
  • catch paper
  • sprays
  • kitchen towels (aka paper towels used for wipe ups, drips)
  • brayer-offs
  • gel prints
  • artwork
  • sandpaper
  • Exacto knife
  • And if all else fails…white gesso!
The cards that are displayed here and in other visual formats have used many of the above-listed ’tools’. Look closely and see if you can identify what was used where.
