Old is New with Christy Hartman
The June Makers Collaboration theme, Old Is New, presents Christy Hartman using three art items from Two Old Crows Mixed Media in the wonderful #OldIsNew YouTube Mixed Media Swap & Make Hop on June 17, 2023.
The Challenge
Christy’s package in the mail from Peg included a hand-made brush, beautiful hand-dyed papers, some dendritic prints, tea bags, a vintage book page, and also a shrinky-dink page! From these, Christy will make a book.
The Art
Starting with an old book cover, she went on her first book-binding project. It was covered with a gel print and closed shut with an elastic band that included little plastic carrot charms. You’d never know this was her first! Look for Christy’s stencils on sale at PM Artist Studio:

The Finished Book
Behind the Scenes: The Making of the Book
We learn from her process video that the name of the book is McGregor’s Garden! Christy gives us a candid look at how she prepared her book for covering and binding, The structure might have started with book binding tape, but the magic undercoat began with black gesso and beautiful sunflower gell prints over it.
