An Old-Timey Keepsake Journal Spread

An Old-Timey Keepsake Journal Spread

The design images present throughout the Sunset Journal Kit became our ephemera, the catalyst, and the guiding force behind the layout for our first two pages. Thoughtful Studio has included 17 printable pages packed full of layered loveliness in the Sunset Journal Kit. Locks, doors, keys, treasures, time, flight – the images as well as the metaphorical symbolism are communicated both through the actual objects and the choice of colors. Now let’s talk about how PM handled Sunset!

HOW IT ALL CAME TOGETHER:
Diving right in… The vintage brass circle case/pendant holding our photographs is actually meant to be earrings. “M” suspended the photos from the top and laced embroidery thread through the holes where beads were meant to dangle – the brass rose bead, a repeat of the ones in the paper patterns from the kit. All beads are “P’s” collection: old coral, apple seeds, tiny turquoise, glass, and brass. The embroidery thread is 100% cotton and probably 20 years old – some are from France, oh là là.
The tags were created first then the pages built to accommodate and showcase them. Colors were adjusted slightly on some of the Sunset printables that were used for the backgrounds. This was done to better coordinate with the ones used on the tags and ephemera. To keep the palette fresh and lively, variations of light and dark in hues of blue and orange are used throughout. The subtle, muted quality of the Sunset kit comes across as more of a texture in many of the printables we used. Printables from the collection with more definition were used to direct the eye to the focal point: the tags – and all of the “charms” with movement reinforcing that as well. Much of the ephemera was fussy cut from the printables some even from the more layered pages. Printing was done on heavy cardstock mostly for the dangling ephemera adding weight and substance to ensure they suspend nicely on the tags.

Our custom quote for these pages, the objects as well as embellishments reinforce the message from the quote:

“The key to making time fly is to unlock the door to creativity.” ~Patricia R. Carmichael~

The key is a symbol for a process whereby insertion into a locked door enables the holder to access all that lies on the other side. In this case, creativity in all it’s glory! The wings, symbolic of flight, visually represent the concept of “making time fly” – the old saying “time flies when you’re having fun” works here also. The organic quality of the wings and torn edges soften the hard, straight lines of the pocket and the suggestive doorway behind. Come explore the layers and hidden pockets inviting the viewers inside P.M. Artist Studio’s world of creative thought for Thoughtful Studio – Tigress Craft – Sunset Journal Kit.
